A Sanctuary in the Charnel Ground

They tell you that to build a life, you have to choose a single lane. They tell you to keep your "professional" self separate from your "spirit," and your "grit" separate from your "grace."
I have never been very good at staying in my lane.
For thirty years, while the world demanded specialization, linear trajectories, and neatly categorized titles, my actual bedrock remained constant: the quiet silence of a meditation cushion. That practice has held me through the highest peaks of directing international newsrooms and through the harrowing, quiet depths of unhousing. It has been the container for the executive leading systems work, the artist unearthing local pigments, and the single mother keeping the woodstove fed.
For a long time, modern culture insists that we compartmentalize these identities—that we hide the woodstove and the meditation cushion when we step into the director’s seat, or set aside our creative wildness to be taken seriously.
I am launching this space because those threads can no longer be kept separate.
Redefining the Frame
Welcome to The Pause.
This is not a curated lifestyle platform or a polished personal brand. It is a launch pad for an integrated way of being—one that honors the messy, raw, and profoundly real nature of living a fully wakeful human life.
We are living in systems designed to keep us moving faster than our spirits can keep up with. The Pause is a intentional reframing: an invitation to reclaim our inheritance of a wakeful heart right in the midst of modern life.
Here is what we are building together in this clearing:
- The Physical Grit: Out in the Vermont woods, I am building a 640-square-foot retreat cabin by hand—12-inch walls, a helical pier foundation, and deep thermal insulation. It is a physical protest against a world that never stops: a hand-built sanctuary for silence, crafted through grit and the generosity of a community that understands the deep necessity of stopping.
- The Creative Outpour: This is a home for the unpolished and the genuine. You will find raw drafts of my novel, StoneWater, vignettes written in the margins of busy days, visual art made with local botanical inks, and reflections unearthed through the simple discipline of presence.
- The Charnel Ground of Modern Work: We will talk honestly about leadership, service, and survival within modern systems. How do we lead with authenticity when institutions feel unravelling? How do we work and breathe inside the "charnel ground" of modern life without losing our center?
An Extension of the Forest Floor
I have spent my life waking myself up from trauma—learning how to transform hard ground into steady footing so I can help clear the path for others.
Consider this digital space an extension of the forest floor: a place to land when the relentless culture of "hustle" finally fails you, and a place to ground yourself when you're ready to live from a deeper center.
The door is open.
I want to know who is standing in this clearing with me. I don’t need your resume or your titles—I want your truth.
In the comments below, I’d love to hear from you:
What is one area of your life right now that feels "messy-yet-integrated"?
With deep gratitude and sawdust on my feet,
Sarah
